There is a gap in the body of Christ that grieves me deeply.
Not a gap in theology — the Church has plenty of that. Not a gap in good intentions, or in Sunday morning enthusiasm, or even in genuine love for God. The gap I am talking about is the gap between what believers confess and what they actually experience. Between the victory the Bible declares and the defeat so many of God's children live in day after day.
I have sat with believers who have been walking with God for twenty, thirty, forty years — faithful, Bible-reading, church-attending, prayer-praying saints — who still woke up every Monday morning feeling exactly the same as they did before they were saved. Still haunted by the same fears. Still bound by the same patterns. Still wondering why the abundant life Jesus promised seems reserved for someone else, somewhere else, in a season that has not quite arrived yet.
If that resonates with you — even a little — this post is for you.
Why Are So Many Believers Living Below Their Inheritance?
The answer is not a lack of faith, generally speaking. It is not a shortage of prayer. It is not even a deficiency of teaching, though how truth is taught matters enormously.
The answer, in most cases, is an identity crisis. As I write in the first chapter of Walking in Total Victory: "The greatest crisis in the Church today is not a financial crisis, not a moral crisis, and not a political crisis. It is an identity crisis. Millions of born-again believers are living like spiritual paupers because they do not know who they are. They know they are saved — but they do not know what that means."
The enemy's primary strategy has never been to convince Christians that God does not exist. It has been to convince them that who God says they are is not quite accurate. That the promises of Scripture apply in principle but not in practice to their specific life.
The enemy does not need to defeat you in battle if he can get you to surrender your identity voluntarily.
This is the lie. And it is devastatingly effective precisely because it does not feel like a lie. It feels like realism. It feels like humility. It feels like a sober assessment of one's limitations in a broken world.
What the Word Actually Says
Second Corinthians 5:17 does not say you are a partially improved version of your old self. It says you are a new creation — kainos ktisis, a new kind of creation that did not exist before. The old you passed away. Not is passing away. Has passed. Ephesians 2:6 says God has already seated you in heavenly places. Romans 8:37 says you are more than a conqueror — not might become one, not will be one eventually — are. Right now. Through him who loved you.
"Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us."
— Romans 8:37 (KJV)Your identity in Christ is not based on your performance, your feelings, your past, or your circumstances. It is based entirely on what Christ accomplished through His death, burial, and resurrection. You cannot earn it. You cannot lose it through a bad day. You receive it by faith and walk in it by the continuous renewal of your mind.
The problem is not a shortage of provision. The problem is a shortage of appropriation.
