The Cleansing Power of the Blood of Jesus: How It Cleanses, Covers & Conquers

“But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.”
— 1 John 1:7

What does the blood of Jesus do according to the Bible?

According to the Bible, the blood of Jesus does six specific things for every believer:

  • It cleanses from all sin — past, present, and future (1 John 1:7)
  • It covers and protects, as the Passover blood did on the doorposts (Exodus 12:13)
  • It purges the conscience from dead works (Hebrews 9:14)
  • It overcomes the accuser — the devil (Revelation 12:11)
  • It grants access to God's presence (Hebrews 10:19)
  • It seals the new covenant between God and His people (Matthew 26:28)

Key Scripture: 1 John 1:7"The blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin."

“But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.”

1 John 1:7 (NKJV)

“And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.”

Revelation 12:11 (NKJV)

The Most Powerful Substance in Creation

If you're searching for what the blood of Jesus actually does, you're not alone. The Bible describes the cleansing power of the blood with stunning specificity — and when you know what it does, you can apply it with faith, not fear.

If you have followed this 40-day journey, yesterday we studied how to receive God’s forgiveness — the legal verdict that our sins have been sent away. Today we go deeper: into the experiential reality of how the blood of Jesus actually cleanses us. Forgiveness is the legal verdict; cleansing by the blood is the experiential reality.

The blood of Jesus is the most powerful substance in all of creation. It is the blood of the eternal Son of God — infinite in its value, unlimited in its application, permanent in its effect. Hebrews 9:14 tells us that this blood “cleanses your conscience from dead works to serve the living God.”

Pleading the Blood of Jesus: What It Means and How to Pray It

When believers speak of pleading the blood of Jesus, they are not performing a magic phrase. They are standing on the legal ground Jesus purchased — declaring to heaven, to earth, and to hell that His blood speaks on their behalf. Hebrews 12:24 says His blood “speaks better things than that of Abel.” Abel's blood cried out for justice; Jesus' blood cries out for mercy.

You cannot plead the blood unless you have first received God's forgiveness (Day 2). And once you know what the blood has done, the full 40 Days of Prayer series walks you into deeper applications of this cleansing power in every area of your life.

The Blood of Jesus in Scripture: A Biblical Theology of Cleansing

From the very first sacrifice in the Garden of Eden — when God Himself killed animals to provide coats of skin for Adam and Eve (Genesis 3:21) — blood has been the language of divine cleansing. “The life is in the blood” (Leviticus 17:11). God took the life of an innocent animal to cover the shame and exposure of sinful human beings.

The entire Mosaic sacrificial system — the Day of Atonement, the morning and evening sacrifices, the sin offerings and burnt offerings — was a 1,500-year object lesson in one truth: the seriousness of sin requires the shedding of blood, and the mercy of God provides that blood. The book of Hebrews draws the line from every drop of blood shed on every Jewish altar directly to the one, perfect, final sacrifice of Jesus on the cross.

“And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission.”

Hebrews 9:22 (NKJV)

Why the Blood of Jesus Has Unique Power

What made the blood of Jesus infinitely superior to every previous sacrifice? Hebrews 10:4 states plainly that “it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.” They covered sin temporarily — an annual covering on the Day of Atonement. But they could not permanently remove it.

Jesus, as the eternal Son of God, offered a blood of infinite value. When the infinite meets the finite, the finite is completely overwhelmed. The blood of Christ did not merely cover your sin for another year — it permanently removed it. The writer of Hebrews uses the perfect tense — a completed action with continuing results: “by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified” (Hebrews 10:14).

The Blood That Speaks

Hebrews 12:24 says the blood of Jesus “speaks better things than that of Abel.” Abel’s blood cried out from the ground for justice and judgment (Genesis 4:10). The blood of Jesus cries out from the throne room of heaven for mercy, for cleansing, for reconciliation. Every time the enemy accuses you before God, the blood of Jesus speaks louder.

What Does the Blood of Jesus Cleanse? (6 Things Scripture Names Directly)

The Blood Cleanses Your Conscience

Hebrews 9:14: “How much more shall the blood of Christ… cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?” The conscience is the inner witness — the moral awareness that registers guilt and shame. For many believers, the conscience has been so stained by guilt that it has become an instrument of torment rather than the healthy moral compass God designed.

The blood of Jesus cleanses the conscience — not merely silences it, but actually purifies it. The Greek word is katharizo — to make clean, to purify thoroughly. A conscience cleansed by the blood is no longer a place of torment but a place of peace.

The Blood Cleanses from ALL Sin — Past, Present, Future

1 John 1:7 contains one of the most sweeping promises in the New Testament: “the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.” The word ‘all’ in the Greek is pas — every kind, every category, every degree, every instance. There is no sub-category of sin for which a different provision is needed. There is no depth of defilement that falls outside the reach of the blood.

Notice also that the verb ‘cleanses’ in 1 John 1:7 is in the present tense — it is a continuous, ongoing action. The blood of Jesus is not a one-time shower at salvation. It is a continuous fountain that keeps the believer continuously clean as they walk in the light.

“In that day a fountain shall be opened for the house of David and for the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and for uncleanness.”

Zechariah 13:1 (NKJV)

How to Apply the Blood of Jesus to Your Life in Prayer

One of the most instructive patterns of blood application in Scripture is the Passover in Exodus 12. God did not say that the blood of the Passover lamb would automatically protect every Israelite household. He said the blood must be applied — on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the house. The application was deliberate, intentional, and visible.

“When I see the blood, I will pass over you.”

Exodus 12:13 (NKJV)

The blood of Jesus is applied through faith — through the conscious, deliberate acknowledgment of its power and the intentional placing of our lives under its covering. This is why we declare the blood. This is why we plead the blood in prayer. Not because God has forgotten its power, but because we are actively aligning ourselves — our homes, our families, our ministries, our minds — under the covering that the blood provides.

Practical Ways to Plead the Blood of Jesus

  1. Over your mind — “I apply the blood of Jesus to every thought pattern.”
  2. Over your conscience — “Let the blood cleanse every stain of guilt.”
  3. Over your home — “Let the enemy find no legal ground in my household.”
  4. Over your family — “Pass over my household with judgment; fill it with blessing.”
  5. Over your finances, ministry, future — “Let the blood cover every domain of my life.”

Overcoming the Enemy by the Blood of the Lamb

Revelation 12:11 reveals the strategy of the overcoming church: “They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.” The blood is an offensive weapon, not merely a defensive shield.

The enemy — the accuser of the brethren — is overcome, silenced, and defeated by the blood. When he comes with accusations of past sin: the blood speaks. When he comes with condemnation: the blood speaks. When he comes with reminders of failures and shortcomings: the blood speaks. And the blood always speaks louder.

The word of their testimony is the declaration of what the blood has done. You overcome the enemy by confessing out loud — with your mouth, in the authority of the name of Jesus — what the blood has accomplished. This is not magical incantation. It is Spirit-empowered faith declaring the finished work of Christ over every accusation.

Altar Call: Apply the Blood Today

Right now, before you read another word, take a moment to consciously place your life under the blood of Jesus. Not as a religious ritual — but as an act of faith. Tell God: “I apply the blood of Jesus to my conscience, to my family, my home, my ministry, my finances, my future. Let the blood speak over every accusation and every defilement.”

There is a fountain still open for sin and uncleanness. His name is Jesus. Come to Him and be washed. The blood is still powerful. It has not lost one drop of its cleansing capacity since it was shed at Calvary.

The blood that cleanses also frees you from guilt and condemnation. If the enemy is still accusing you after the blood has spoken — step into Day 4: How to Overcome Guilt and Condemnation next, and then into Day 5: How to Restore the Joy of Your Salvation. Cleansing always leads to joy.

A Prayer to Apply the Blood of Jesus

Lord Jesus, I consciously apply Your blood to every area of my life right now. To my mind — cleanse every impure thought pattern. To my conscience — remove every stain of guilt. To my body — sanctify and purify. To my spirit — fill every cleansed space with Your Holy Spirit.

Father, I plead the blood of Jesus over my home and my family. Let the enemy find no legal ground. In the name of Jesus, I overcome every accusation of the enemy by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of my testimony.

The blood covers me completely. I am washed. I am white. I am free. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the blood of Jesus do according to the Bible?

According to 1 John 1:7, the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin. Hebrews 9:14 adds that it cleanses the conscience from dead works. The blood redeems (Ephesians 1:7), justifies (Romans 5:9), sanctifies (Hebrews 13:12), and overcomes the accuser (Revelation 12:11).

What does pleading the blood of Jesus mean?

Pleading the blood of Jesus is the faith-act of consciously applying the covering of Christ’s blood over a situation, person, or area of life — modeled after the Passover in Exodus 12:13. It is not magical incantation; it is Spirit-empowered declaration that Jesus’ finished work stands over whatever the enemy raises against us.

Why is the blood of Jesus so powerful?

The blood of Jesus is infinitely powerful because it is the blood of the eternal Son of God. Hebrews 10:4 shows that animal blood could only cover sin temporarily; Hebrews 10:14 declares that Jesus ‘by one offering… has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.’ Finite sin met infinite atonement — and was completely overwhelmed.

How do I apply the blood of Jesus to my life?

Apply the blood of Jesus through conscious, verbal declaration in prayer. Consecrate specific areas — your mind, conscience, family, home, finances — and declare them covered by the blood of Christ. This is modeled in Exodus 12, where the blood had to be deliberately placed on the doorposts to activate God’s protection.

Can the blood of Jesus cleanse any sin?

Yes. 1 John 1:7 says the blood cleanses ‘from all sin’ — the Greek word pas means every kind, every category, every degree. Isaiah 1:18 promises that ‘though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.’ No depth of defilement is beyond the reach of the blood of Jesus.

The blood has already been shed. The cleansing is already available. Apply it right now — not tomorrow.
